Disappointment at shock Target closure plans
Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council Mayor Wayne Thomas said he was very disappointed at the proposed closure of Clare’s Target Country store as part of a national restructure by parent company Wesfarmers.
Mr Thomas said he was notified by letter of the decision last week which outlined the decision and confirmed that the Clare store was not flagged for a conversion to Kmart and would close next year.
“The closure of this retail store will have a detrimental impact on our communities,” Mr Thomas said.
“Having a store of this size and with such a wide variety of affordable goods has helped promote Clare as a regional centre, and its closure will not just impact local residents but will have far reaching effects.
“This decision by Wesfarmers is extremely disappointing as this company has significant ties to rural communities and should understand the effect of their decision.”
The site of the Clare Target Country store and the remainder of the commercial complex on the south-eastern side of the town’s main street was formerly occupied by a motor dealership, clothing shop, pharmacy and an office building (the former Wien Smith building).
The Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council supported the retail precinct development as part of its main street renewal through footpaths and tree planting.
