Barrier Highway - Burra to Riverton

Please be advised that commencing 6 May 2024 until late November 2024, there will be work s occurring along the Barrier Highway from Burra to Riverton, to improve long term safety and efficiency for all road users. These works form part of the $168 million Road Safety Program 2023-2025, jointly funded by the Australian (50%) and South Australian (50%) governments and the National Black Spot Program.

These road safety upgrades on the Barrier Highway include:

  • shoulder widening and sealing work;
  • improving existing curves including upgrading minor side road junction and access points’
  • pavement rehabilitation;
  • audio tactile line marking; and
  • safety barrier installation.

The upgrades are designed to improve safety, freight efficiency, and support regional economic growth.

Works will commence near Burra and move progressively south towards Riverton. To safely facilitate these works, traffic will be reduced to a single lane on the Barrier Highway between Burra and Riverton where works are underway. Traffic controllers will be on site to help manage the flow of traffic during work hours.

Outside of work hours, lane restrictions will be removed, and traffic will be reopened to two-way traffic. Speed restrictions will be required at all times until works are completed. Please plan your trips, be cautious around workers, and follow the speed limits and signs.
