Council Briefing Sessions

Council Briefing Sessions support informed decision-making by giving Elected Members the opportunity to learn more about particular issues, build their understanding of local government matters and ask questions or seek clarification.

Under section 90A of the Local Government Act 1999, Council or the Chief Executive Officer may arrange a Briefing Session where more than one member of Council or a Council Committee is invited to participate. These sessions are held exclusively to discuss matters that are, or are proposed to be, included on the agenda for a formal meeting of Council or a Council Committee.

All Briefing Sessions will be open to the public, unless Council or the Chief Executive Officer has determined that a session will be held in confidence.

A decision to hold a session in confidence is made on a case-by-case basis and only where the briefing concerns information or a matter that falls within the confidentiality provisions of section 90(3) of the Local Government Act 1999.

Briefing Sessions are generally held on the first Wednesday of the month, with the program being published on the website at least three days prior to the session or as soon as practicable after the Council or Chief Executive Officer has declared to hold a Briefing Session.
