Use of stationary engines to auger a crop -
The operator must clear the space immediately around the engine to a distance of at least 4 metres, or a person who is able to control the engine is present at all times while the engine is in use. The operator must also carry a shovel or rake, and a portable water spray; and ensure the engine or exhaust system complies with the following:
- all engine exhaust exits through the exhaust system, and
- the system prevents the escape of burning material.
- heated parts of the system are prevented from coming into contact with flammable material
- the system is in good working order
Use of internal combustion engines to harvest or move a flammable crop -
The operator must carry a shovel or rake, and a portable water spray; and ensure the engine or exhaust system complies with the following:
- all engine exhaust exits through the exhaust system, and
- the system prevents the escape of burning material.
- heated parts of the system are prevented from coming into contact with flammable material
- the system is in good working order
Code of Practice
The Code requires suspending grain harvesting operations when the local actual Grassland Fire Danger Index exceeds 35.
A copy of the Code of Practice and handy stickers that can be stuck in your harvester easily show how to work out the Grassland Fire Danger Index using wind speed, temperature and relative humidity.
