New chapter for Riverton’s historic community hall
Riverton’s historic Community Hall is a step closer to a new lease of life, with Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council backing an expanded refurbishment to transform how the much-loved building welcomes people, hosts performances and brings the community together.
At its October 2026 meeting, Council approved a further funding allocation of up to $2.015 million to progress the expanded refurbishment, with a revised project value of up to $3.135 million excluding GST.
The project is supported by a $770,000 grant through the South Australian Government’s Enabling Infrastructure Program and Council will now seek a formal extension of time to allow for the delivery of the expanded project.
“Council gratefully acknowledges the South Australian Government’s substantial contribution to this project. That support will help renew an important community asset and sustain its place in Riverton’s civic and cultural life,” Mayor Allan Aughey OAM said.
The revised approach responds to unforeseen structural issues and provides an opportunity to improve the hall’s accessibility, functionality and capacity to accommodate a wider range of community activities.
Mayor Aughey welcomed the decision as a significant investment in Riverton’s community life.
“Riverton Community Hall has served successive generations as a place of gathering, celebration and cultural activity.
“Council’s decision recognises the enduring importance of that role and the need to equip the building for contemporary community expectations,” he said.
“It is particularly pleasing that the revised proposal reflects the aspirations expressed through community consultation.
“Council has an opportunity to retain the character of a familiar and valued building while making it more accessible, adaptable and useful for the generations who will follow.”
The preferred concept provides for improved connections between the hall’s activity spaces, upgraded kitchen and toilet facilities, more flexible performance and function areas and lift access to the upper level.
A proposed new entrance and foyer will improve arrival and circulation through the building, with the preferred frontage treatment to be further refined during final design.
The final design is scheduled to be presented to Council for approval in December 2026.
