Cat Management
Registration
Currently it is not a legislated requirement for cat owners to register their cats with Council. Nor does Council have any Bylaws in place that require cats be registered. However, we strongly recommend ensuring your cat is identifiable so if trapped it can be safely returned.
Cats and the Law
As a result of the recent changes to the legislation governing cats and dogs, cats have an (almost) equal footing under the Act. Numerous clauses in the Dog and Cat Management Act now include cats (although exemptions exist for Control Orders, compulsory registration, etc).
From 1st July 2018, it will be mandatory for all cats to be Microchipped over three months of age. Likewise, all new generations of cats after 1st July 2018 (or when a cat changes owners after 1st July 2018) must be desexed.
Limitations on number of Cats
Currently Council does not have a Bylaw that sets out limitations on the number of cats that can be kept on a property, although Council does not recommend keeping excessive amounts of cats and promotes responsible cat ownership.
However, it should be noted that the establishment of a Cattery requires Development Approval.
Responsible Cat Ownership
Council strongly encourages responsible cat ownership, including (but not limited to):
- Desexing
- Microchipping
- Collar (with identification)
- Confining/containing to their property
- Worming, Flea Treatment, etc
Trapping of Cats
Cat Traps can be hired from all Council Offices for a deposit which is refunded after the cage is returned damage free. It is important to note that it is the responsibility of the hirer of the trap to dispose of any trapped cats.
